On Sunday, Minister of Transport Abdullah Laibi announced the laying of the foundation stone for the (Silk Tunnel) project in Basra Governorate, in the presence of the Minister of Planning and Chairman of the Parliamentary Services Committee, noting that the tunnel is the first of its kind in the Middle East.
Laibi said in a statement that he received / the information, a copy of it, that "we will start the first stage of the project of constructing a tunnel for Al-Zubair (the concrete parts manufacturing basin) according to the contract signed with the Korean company Daewoo and under the supervision of the Italian consulting company" Tacentel ".
He added that "the tunnel is the first of its kind in the Middle East as a tunnel for vehicles under water in a way to pour and float concrete pieces and download them to the bottom of the channel." He explained that "the length of the tunnel is 2.5 km, including the telescopes and the upper surface, and the surface of the tunnel will be 16 meters underwater while the bottom will be The tunnel is 31 meters deep.
He continued, "The tunnel consists mainly of 10 square units, the length of one 125 meters, a width of 35 meters, and a height of 11.5 meters," noting that "these pieces will be poured into a special basin that is implemented for this purpose", indicating that "the dimensions of the basin are 300 * 400" One meter from the bottom and digging with a depth of up to 18 meters in the form of a graduated inclination after drawing water from it, taking into account the weakness of the soil, and pouring its base to be ready to pour the box pieces. "
He pointed out that "the tunnel is designed to display three corridors in each direction with a corridor for services and emergency", stressing that "the ministry is striving for the development of infrastructure for most of its formations, especially Iraqi ports, through an integrated work system aimed at using modern advanced methods in the work mechanism."
