The US-led coalition against ISIS withdrew from the strategic al-Qaim base on Iraq’s border with Syria, and handed it over to the Iraqi army.
In a statement earlier, the alliance's Joint Operations Room said it had held formal ceremonies for handing the base over to Iraqi forces, with the participation of the Director of Support Forces Affairs, the US team, Vincent Parker.
"This day symbolizes a historic moment for the joint operations room of Operation Solid Torque and our partners in the Iraqi security forces," Parker said in a speech during the handover ceremony.
He added: “Al-Qa’im base served as a vital site in the war against ISIS, for the first time when Iraqi forces liberated the Al-Qa’im area from the evil existence (of ISIS), and later as an important base during the Battle of Al-Baghuz (in Syria), the last lands that were under ISIS control.”
He continued: "The handing over of Al Qaeda today is made possible by the efforts and successes of our partners in the Iraqi security forces."
The handover of this site to Iraqi forces came hours after a new missile attack targeting an Iraqi base with foreign forces deployed, which is the 24th similar attack in less than 6 months. Ended 29 / A 43
