The UN Security Council praises again the Iraqi elections: they were free and fair
Shafaq News/ The United Nations Security Council praised, on Monday, the early Iraqi parliamentary elections that took place last month, considering that they were free and fair, and called on all parties to follow legal means regarding the objections.
A statement of the council, seen by Shafak News Agency, said, "The members of the Security Council welcomed the report of the Secretary-General on the electoral process in Iraq and the assistance of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) to this process, pursuant to resolution 2576 (2021)."
The members of the Security Council welcomed the “positive assessment of the international election observers of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq,” and congratulated “the Government of Iraq and the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) for conducting technically well-managed and generally peaceful elections on 10 October 2021.”
The members of the Security Council also welcomed "the findings of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq and the Independent High Electoral Commission that the partial manual recount of polling stations conforms to the electronic results transmission system of the Independent High Electoral Commission."
The members of the Security Council commended the Iraqi people for their commitment to the electoral process in the face of dynamic security challenges.
They acknowledged "the role of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq in supporting the efforts of the Iraqi government and the Independent High Electoral Commission in planning and implementing genuine free and fair elections led by Iraqis and owned by Iraqis."
They welcomed "the efforts made by the Government of Iraq, the Independent High Electoral Commission and the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq to promote women's political participation." The members of the Security Council commended "the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq for demonstrating objectivity in its efforts to support Iraq throughout the electoral process."
The members of the Security Council renewed their condemnation of both the 7 November 2021 assassination attempt against Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi and the continuing threats of violence against UNAMI, UNHCR and others.
The members of the Security Council "regretted the use of violence to resolve election-related grievances and urged all political parties to pursue legal and peaceful means to resolve these grievances. They condemned attempts to discredit the elections."
The members of the Security Council encouraged all stakeholders to "respect the legally defined process and facilitate a peaceful and independent judicial review of electoral appeals". They noted that "UN staff will continue to monitor any illegal attempts to undermine the electoral process."
The members of the Security Council renewed the "Secretary-General's call on all political parties, candidates and other stakeholders in Iraq to be patient and to address any outstanding concerns through existing legal channels, and to create a post-election environment that promotes mutual understanding and national unity through peaceful and constructive dialogue."
The statement said that members of the Security Council look forward to "the peaceful formation of an inclusive government that will advance meaningful reforms to meet the needs and aspirations of all Iraqis, including women, youth and marginalized communities. They renew their support for Iraq's independence, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity."
