A member of the Victory Coalition, Aqeel Al-Rudaini, confirmed, on Wednesday, that more than 40 billion dollars were spent on the electricity file without finding solutions, explaining that the electrical connection with Saudi Arabia came politically and does not cover part of the needs of Basra Governorate.
Al-Rudaini said in a statement to the Information Agency, that “the electrical connection with Saudi Arabia came politically for several reasons, the most important of which is that the connection needs two years to see the light, and there is a very high cost to extend its lines, and work begins after two years by supplying Iraq with only 500 megawatts, and this amount is very simple.” It does not cover part of Basra Governorate.”
He added that "there is a great media intimidation about the electrical connection with Saudi Arabia without benefit because Iraq needs to build a system internally through solid companies such as Siemens, the German."
He pointed out that "the electrical connection is one of the most important files far from strategic planning, as there is a link now with Iran and serves the provinces of Basra, Wasit and Diyala, but the failure to pay the dues of Iranian gas and electricity by the Iraqi side, we find reluctance from time to time."
And a member of the dissolved Baghdad Provincial Council, Saad Al-Mutalibi, had considered, earlier, that the memorandum of understanding regarding the electrical connection with Saudi Arabia falls within a political file drawn up by the American departments, indicating that the project is not sufficient to supply the Karrada district with electricity.
