Shafaq News/ The London-based Al-Arab newspaper reported, on Saturday, that the United States imposed Jordan as a trading partner on Iraq.
And US President Joseph Biden, during his call with Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, yesterday, Saturday, involved the Jordanian King Abdullah II, which the newspaper prepared, which led to the conclusion of the central agreement with the US Federal Reserve in exchange for imposing Jordan as a trade partner by forcing the implementation of previous agreements between the two countries. .
In its issue issued today, the newspaper quoted observers as saying that Biden's inclusion of the Jordanian monarch in a call he had with Al-Sudani about the economic situation in Iraq, aimed at imposing Jordan as a trade partner with Iraq, paying attention to its demands and accelerating the implementation of previous agreements between the two countries.
The newspaper also says that Washington is seeking to help Jordan alleviate the severity of the economic crisis it is going through, whether through direct American aid or by urging regional partners to help it, as is the case with Iraq, especially in the field of fuel.
According to the newspaper, the United States considers Jordan an important strategic partner, given its presence on the borders of Israel and its influential role in moving peace efforts. and its allied militias on Syrian soil.
The newspaper indicates that Jordan complains that many of the promises made by Gulf countries for assistance have faltered or have not been implemented.
Observers believe that expanding the circle of dealings with Iraq is the last resort for Jordan, especially after the doors of Gulf grants have closed and the International Monetary Fund's support is nearing an end, while the economic crisis is intensifying and threatening protests similar to the Arab Spring protests inside the Hashemite Kingdom, according to the newspaper.
The newspaper report believes that Jordan is complaining that many of the promises made by Gulf countries to help have faltered or have not been implemented, and that Oman is now facing exceptional hardship as a result of the decline in remittances from residents in the Gulf after the expansion of job localization and the repercussions of the Corona epidemic.
In addition, according to the London-based Arabs, Saudi Arabia's decision to stop adopting the direct aid method that Jordan used to benefit from and to compensate it with investment projects that do not provide urgent solutions to the Jordan crisis.
Al-Arab newspaper believes that the Iraqi prime minister does not believe that he will reject Washington's request to provide urgent support to Jordan, expand the circle of commercial dealings, and implement what was previously agreed upon, especially the extension of the Iraqi oil pipeline to Jordan, known as the Basra-Aqaba pipeline, which is opposed by pro-Iranian parties.
The Americans have a bargaining chip and pressure on Iraq to implement these steps, according to the newspaper, which is the issue of financial transfers and the price of the dinar.
Energy is one of Jordan's biggest concerns due to the high import cost and its impact on the trade deficit and the high prices of commodities in the local market.
Jordan and Iraq agreed last March to continue working on a memorandum of understanding signed between the two sides to import Kirkuk crude oil at a rate of 10,000 barrels per day, to be transported to the Jordanian oil refinery in Zarqa.
Last December, Jordan witnessed demonstrations in several locations inside the country to protest against the government's decision to increase the prices of fuel and basic materials.
The poverty rate in the Hashemite Kingdom increased to 24 percent, an increase of 6 percent from what it was previously, according to estimates that Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nasser Al-Shuraideh spoke about in August 2021.
On Thursday, Biden hosted King Abdullah II at the White House, and during a luncheon, in the presence of Crown Prince Hussein, he acknowledged the Kingdom of Jordan's "decisive role as guardian of the Islamic holy places in Jerusalem."
The Jordan News Agency (Petra) said that the US President thanked the Jordanian monarch for the "deep partnership between the two countries, and for his leadership of Jordan as an axis of stability in the Middle East," stressing "the US's full commitment to supporting the kingdom's stability and economic prosperity to face various regional and global challenges."
The Jordanian government relies mostly on foreign aid, especially American, to secure its annual expenses. Jordan does not have any economic and financial resources, and therefore if external support is cut off, things will deteriorate at home.
During his meeting with the Jordanian monarch last July, the US President announced his country's intention to sign a new memorandum of understanding with Jordan, through which it would provide annual aid to this country of no less than $1.45 billion, during the period between 2023 and 2029.
Over the past years, the United States has provided generous aid to Jordan. It is in Washington's interest to promote stability in the Hashemite Kingdom, which hosts more than 1.3 million Syrian refugees, representing about 15 percent of Jordan's population.
