Baghdad: Shatha Al-Janabi and Haider Al-Jaber
Specialists see the railway link project between Iraq and Iran as an opportunity to develop infrastructure and rebuild the national network.
Khaled added, “The Shalamcheh port, which witnesses the crossing of thousands of visitors during the fortieth visit, will be rehabilitated and developed, with a moving navigation bridge on the Shatt al-Arab, parallel to the Khalid bin al-Walid Bridge, with a length of one thousand meters and a period of up to 18 months, with 71% Iraqi hands, in partnership with the Iranian side, with Small bridges on irrigation canals and other bridges for crossing cars,” noting that “the project includes three stations, one of which is in the border and central region, and the construction of infrastructure. This will reduce the cost of the project to $150 million, with funding from the federal government within the operational plan and investment budget for the year 2023.” The total length of the project with the bridge is 36 km, starting from the Shalamcheh border crossing, passing through the Shatt al-Arab district, across the bridge parallel to the Khalid bin Al-Walid Bridge, and ending in the Al-Kaziza area.
Iraq hopes to develop its trains and convert some of them into five-star passenger cars, with the line transporting between 3-4 million visitors annually and in one season during religious visits. Representative for Basra Governorate, Kazem Al-Touki, believes that “Iraq is an important hub in the region, and if it exploits its geographical capabilities between the Arabian Gulf and Turkey, it will benefit greatly,” and he added that “railway connectivity to transport people falls within development plans.” Al-Touki continued in his speech to “Al-Sabah” that “important tourism revenues can be achieved that encourage foreigners to visit or pass through Iraq if costs decrease,” noting that the railway connection “is an important benefit and is part of the development road that is scheduled to connect the region.”
The researcher described economic affairs, Dr. Haitham Al-Khazali described the railway connection as the first international connection with the development road. He also described it as a process of economic and commercial development and an important development of infrastructure.
Al-Khazali said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “The railway connection between Iraq and Iran will be the first international connection with the development road supposed to be established between Iraq and the countries of the region towards Europe via Turkey,” and he added that “this road has great economic benefits represented in creating an infrastructure system.” Modernization and settlement of industries around the road, and it also settles tourist and commercial areas and residential cities on both sides of the road.”
