The Ministry of Environment warned that Baghdad was entering the phenomenon of “island cities,” while Parliament called for the private sector to be involved in health care.
Director General of the Technical Department in the Ministry, Dr. Al-Waeli’s daughter told “Al-Sabah”: “This phenomenon occurs as a result of the reduction of green spaces in any city, so that it becomes a rubble box of construction that lacks biological diversity, green spaces, and vegetation that absorb and reduce heat between morning and evening.”
Al-Waeli added, "Baghdad in particular has entered the phenomenon of 'island cities', as we notice that the temperatures in the morning or at noon are equal to their counterparts in the evening, which negatively affects the health of the capital's citizens, their psychological state, and other influences."
Al-Waeli called on the concerned authorities, the municipality, and the Municipality of Baghdad to “reduce the danger of eliminating green spaces from one region to another, with the necessity of creating many spaces and forests to serve as lungs for the citizens of the capital,” pointing out that “humans benefit from plants by inhaling the oxygen that the latter produces and taking carbon dioxide instead.” Therefore, trees are considered human lungs, and to preserve the health of the capital’s residents, green spaces must be expanded.”
