    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
An informed source revealed today, Tuesday (October 31, 2023), that resolving the issue of the “Fertile Crescent with mines” near the border with Iran and their exploitation in agriculture has been postponed for three reasons.
The source said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "The war of the 1980s between Iraq and Iran turned vast areas of fertile lands near the border strip into minefields that still claim casualties from time to time, especially since the mines are spread out in high density and their number, according to some assessments, reaches tens of thousands." ".
He added, "The minefields extend over land that is more like the Fertile Crescent that extends over long distances," pointing out that "calls to remove mines to take advantage of the lands for agriculture have been postponed by the security leaders currently for three reasons, the most prominent of which is security reasons as they constitute a factor that prevents infiltration at large levels." In addition, the matter requires great capabilities due to the abundance of mines, in addition to the fact that the severe drought hinders any attempt to invest in them at the present time.”
He pointed out, "The postponement will remain until further notice in light of general circumstances that are not favorable for this step at the present time."
The areas contaminated with mines and all types of projectiles in Iraq over the past years amounted to more than 6,700 square kilometers, and the largest part of it was cleared, leaving only 2,100 square kilometers remaining. By converting it to dunums, it is equivalent to about 850 thousand dunums, an area that represents more than 17% of the area. Which Iraq usually cultivates in its winter agricultural plans, amounting to more than 5 million dunums.
