    Today, Saturday, the Ministry of Agriculture announced that 4 million dunums of desert lands entered the agricultural plan for the current season, while confirming that Iraq contains huge reserves of groundwater.

    "This season, the ministry relied on desert lands to compensate for the shortage of agricultural areas that are irrigated by river water," said the ministry's spokesman, Muhammad al-Khazali.
    He added, "More than 4 million dunams are included in the agricultural plan for the current winter season, and most of them are grown for the wheat crop, as it was relied on well water," pointing out that "Iraq contains huge reserves of groundwater." 
    He pointed out, "The cultivation of these areas took place in coordination with the Ministry of Water Resources and according to the actual needs of these lands in the governorates of Iraq, which are mainly desert lands that are irrigated with well water." 
    Regarding the ministry's plan with regard to preserving groundwater, Khazali indicated that "groundwater is considered a renewable revolution that depends on what falls from rainwater, as well as the strategic location of Iraq as a collecting basin for groundwater," noting that "the ministries of agriculture and water resources have plans to preserve On the wealth of groundwater and benefiting from it in the years that witnessed a lack of rain water and water releases from neighboring countries. 
    He stressed that "the global situation, which led to a scarcity of the wheat crop, prompted the ministry to rely on desert lands that are irrigated with well water," explaining that "the ministry took into consideration preserving the water resources in the wells."
