Over the past years, Iraq has become accustomed to being the losing party in the trade balance, especially with neighboring countries, meaning that it imports many times more than what it exports to it, especially Turkey and Iran. However, the trade figures last year, 2023, were slightly distorted, especially with the imposition of restrictions on Iranian trade. Iraq and the possibility of access to the dollar, and one of these imbalances is the increase in Iraq’s exports to Iran by about 200% compared to 2022.

Iran's special trade representative in Iraq, Farzad Belten, said that Iran imported from Iraq worth $580 million during the year 2023, increasing by 184% compared to 2022.

Farzad Belten told the Iranian "Mehr" agency that the main materials imported from Iraq include stones. Precious metals, polymer products, household appliances, electrical and electronic industries.

The nature of the exported materials raises important questions, as it is strange that Iraq is an exporter of “electrical and electronic industries” and household appliances to Iran.

The only explanation is that Iraq imported these goods from other countries, and then gave them to Iran, instead of the frozen Iranian debts in Iraq in dollars that Tehran cannot access.

This number matches Washington’s announcement in March of last year, 2023, to allow the release of $500 million of Iran’s frozen funds in Iraq, amounting to approximately $10 billion.
