Democratic conditions threaten Kurdistan elections and embarrass the Commission

The Kurdistan Democratic Party insists on not participating in the legislative elections in the region and calls for their postponement, unless its conditions are discussed, which puts the Independent High Electoral Commission in embarrassment as it is approaching the end of its term, if Parliament does not intervene in a new extension of its tasks, which is Which means an amendment to its law. Yesterday, Saturday, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, discussed the file of controversial issues with Baghdad during his meeting with an American delegation.
The regional government stated, in a statement, that Barzani received a delegation from the US Senate, which included Senators Ted Budd and Joni Ernst, in the presence of Emiri Ambassador Alina Romanowski and the Consul General to the region, Mark Straw.
The statement added that Barzani “expressed his thanks to the United States for its continued support, especially its support for the Peshmerga,” stressing
“the necessity of addressing the controversial issues between the Kurdistan region and the federal government based on the provisions of the constitution and the signed agreements, as well as respect for the principles of the federal system and the constitutional entity of the region.” .
The statement explained, “The two sides discussed the Kurdistan Parliament elections file, and in this regard, the importance of holding free, transparent and fair elections that guarantee the participation of all parties and preserve the rights of the components was emphasized.”
For his part, a member of the House of Representatives for the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Sabah Sobhi, told Al-Sabah: “The party decided not to run in the elections, unless the conditions and mechanism of the elections are modified, provided that they are free and fair and conducted under the supervision of legitimate bodies,” noting that “the goal of The party is not to postpone, but rather that the elections be according to democratic principles and according to the arrangement of minorities, and if they are postponed without these conditions, we will not participate in them either.”
Sobhi added, “We believe that the elections will not be held on time, because of the position of the party, which is the largest bloc in the political composition of the Kurdistan region, and we believe that the elections are impossible to go ahead without the participation of the democratic party.”
Regarding the commission’s lifespan, which ends after the region’s elections date, Sobhi said, “The House of Representatives can find a legal formula to continue its work, especially since there was a political decision and agreement between the political blocs to renew the commission’s work.”
He pointed out that “the article regarding the Commission’s supervision of the provincial council elections and the Kurdistan Region elections came without specifying a date. It is likely for us that the region’s elections will not take place, and it is possible that we will find a legal solution regarding the work of the Commission, and then hold the elections,” adding that “the basis of the problem is “The elections must be resolved.”
