Director of Petroleum Products Distribution, Hussein Talib, announced today, Wednesday (May 8, 2024), a decrease in gasoline imports by approximately 8 million liters, in a step to end the issue of importing petroleum derivatives.
Talib told "Baghdad Today", "The future plans of the refinery companies and the distribution sector are to announce self-sufficiency for improved and super gasoline products, as the total quantity imported amounts to 15 million liters, apart from the production of these derivatives in the Karbala refinery, which is still under implementation, and the Baiji refinery." .
He added, "The import of gasoline has been reduced by about 8 million liters in a step that seeks to end the file of importing petroleum derivatives related to gasoline at the beginning of 2025," pointing out that "self-sufficiency in gas oil and white oil will be announced, in addition to developing a plan to export gas oil after “Self-sufficiency, reaching the stage of self-sufficiency, and reaching the peak of strategic capacity.”
Regarding the rise in the prices of petroleum products, Talib stressed that “this rise is a return to the previous prices of the improved gasoline product, which was sold for 850 dinars in 2014 until 2020, that is, at the time of the Corona pandemic and the decline in global prices, as the price of improved gasoline decreased and is linked to global prices.” ".
He stated, “The return now comes to changes in global oil prices and the loss and difference in prices they caused,” explaining that “the cost of these derivatives to the government amounts to 1,000 dinars, and the state compensates 150 dinars, and super gasoline costs 1,400 dinars, that is, with a subsidy of 150 dinars as well, and there is still Support for these two products from the government.”
He continued, "The basically targeted quantity of total consumption is 18%, and Iraq consumes approximately 32%, and the largest quantity of consumption is regular gasoline, which is sold for 450 dinars."
The director of petroleum products distribution called for “installing the gas system in cars, which cost a million and a quarter, but the state sells it to the citizen for 500 thousand dinars, that is, with a subsidy of 750 thousand dinars. Gas consumption is less and is environmentally friendly and its cost is lower, as its price is 200 dinars per liter, which constitutes 50%.” ".
Iraq was importing more than 15 million liters of gasoline daily, in addition to 10 million liters of kerosene, in addition to white oil or kerosene. However, with the opening of the Karbala refinery and the opening of the entire Baiji refinery, the import of most petroleum derivatives stopped and the import of improved gasoline decreased to 5 million liters per day. Only, while the Ministry of Oil expects fuel imports to stop completely by 2025.
