UNITED NATIONS - The United Nations said on Thursday it had tightened security measures for its employees to receive postal packages. This came after the US security services intercepted suspicious mail packets sent to a number of eminent figures, such as former President Barack Obama in Washington, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her husband Bill Clinton in New York, as well as the office of CNN News.
"We have no problems with the postal packages, but we will be more cautious when receiving parcels here at the United Nations," Farhan Haq, spokesman for the UN secretary-general, told reporters at the organization's headquarters in New York.
US authorities found more suspicious packages on Thursday and stepped up efforts to track those responsible for sending the mined parcels to leading Democrats and critics of President Donald Trump less than two weeks before midterm congressional elections.
None of the parcels found were detonated, and there were no reports of injuries.
In a statement, the White House condemned "deliberate deliberate attacks" on Obama, the Clinton family and other public figures, and stressed that "anyone responsible for the parcels will be held to the fullest extent of the penalties in accordance with the law."
An official said the authorities had found a new suspicious package addressed to Joe Biden, former Vice President Barack Obama, at a postal facility in Newcastle County, Delaware.
Earlier, New York police said they were examining suspected bomb-containing packages and arrived at Robert Dineiro's Tribeca Grill restaurant.
The Washington-based radio station WML said on Thursday it had received a suspicious parcel and evacuated the station building.
Investigators believe the Internet is the source of the design and instructions for the manufacture of booby-trapped packages, a federal law enforcement official told Reuters on Thursday, noting that the instructions for making such devices are widely distributed on Web sites and in advertisements published by militant groups such as al Qaeda and the state.
