The European Union confirmed that the appointment of a new Iraqi Prime Minister is an important step towards overcoming the political deadlock in the country.
"The appointment of the new Prime Minister, Mohammed Tawfiq Allawi, is an important step in overcoming the political deadlock in the country," the European Union Foreign Office said in a statement.
He added, "Iraq urgently needs an effective transitional government that can focus on reforms and new elections."
The leader of the Al-Fateh coalition, Hadi al-Amiri, and Muqtada al-Sadr, the leader of the Sadrist movement that supports the Saeron bloc, reached agreement on the nomination of Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi to head the new Iraqi government, amid opposition to the State of Law coalition led by former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.
And the former Iraqi Communications Minister, Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi, announced that President Barham Saleh, on Saturday, entrusted him with forming a new government, two days after Saleh granted the political blocs a deadline to agree on a non-controversial candidate to end the crisis of protests that forced the previous government to resign.
The Prime Minister-designate pledged to form a government away from sectarianism and to work for early elections, as well as dialogue with demonstrators against political and economic conditions.
Iraq has witnessed since the beginning of last October, large protests to demand improvement in living conditions, fighting corruption, dismissing the government, dissolving parliament, and holding early elections, and killing at least 500 people during these protests. Ended 29 / A 43
