Water Resources: Water releases are able to push the salt tongue off the Shatt al-Arab
Baghdad/ Firas Adnan
The Ministry of Water Resources considered the Tigris River flow rates in Baghdad to be not small, and its capacity is more than 400 cubic meters per second, and attributed the decrease in levels to the storage plan in order to benefit from water in the summer season, explaining that the quantities arriving in the southern governorates are able to pay The salt tongue from the Shatt al-Arab.
The advisor in the ministry, Aoun Diab, said, "The water in the Tigris River passes inside Baghdad at more than 400 cubic meters per second, and this amount is not a small amount."
Diab added, "These quantities are officially registered with us in the Saray Baghdad area. There is a station that continuously measures the entry of water, and gives accurate figures about its flow into the capital."
He pointed out that “the ministry passes the minimum amount of water to benefit from it in the storage process inside the dams, because there is no need, as we are in the harvest season,” noting that “the agricultural season is over and does not need water for irrigation, except for vegetables and orchards, which require smaller quantities in addition to to normal consumption.
Diab explained that "the current releases reach the borders between the provinces of Maysan and Basra at 80 cubic meters per second to prevent the penetration of the salt tide from the Persian Gulf into the Shatt al-Arab."
He pointed out, "The Euphrates River reaches the borders separating the two governorates of Muthanna and Dhi Qar by about 65 cubic meters per second," and considered "this operational plan is guaranteed for the purpose of meeting our needs in the summer."
Diab said, "The release of larger quantities will make us suffer from a deficit in meeting the needs of the summer, with the lack of water resources due to the lack of rain, a large rise in temperatures and an increase in evaporation rates."
He continues, "Some social media and media outlets circulated a video clip of a person walking in the Tigris River and tried to deliver disturbing messages to the Iraqi street, but we assure everyone that these quantities are calculated and we are working according to a well-thought-out plan."
For his part, Ministry spokesman Ali Radi said, "The Ministry of Water Resources has reduced water releases from dams and reservoirs due to the lack of actual need for them and after the end of the winter agricultural season, as part of an annual program of the ministry in order to preserve water reserves."
Radi added, "The ministry was content with releasing batches of water that meet the main needs, including drinking water, some vegetables and agricultural crops with little consumption, and other main requirements, including environmental run-off."
He pointed out, "Additional water releases will be secured within the summer season plan, so we assure citizens that there is sufficient water storage and there is no need to worry."
Regarding Iraq's negotiations with upstream countries, Radi said that "the ministry is awaiting the visit of the Turkish President's envoy to Iraq, Faisal Oglu, to complete the meetings and technical discussions on the water file."
He continued, "The visit comes to complete the joint protocol and the memorandum of understanding between Iraq and Turkey, in addition to the topic of the research center that is to be established in Baghdad," noting that "the center has reached advanced stages of technical discussions, and that the Iraqi side has completed the logistical matters pertaining to the center." .
Radi added, "The Ministry of Water Resources is awaiting confirmation of the date of the visit of the Turkish president's envoy during the coming period to continue the issue of negotiations."
In the past few days, social networking sites have published clips showing a significant decrease in the levels of the Tigris River, amid warnings issued by some observers of a possible crisis in drinking water in some governorates.
