The Ministry of Water Resources said that Iraq has 13 groundwater reservoirs, and while it indicated that 4 million acres of agricultural land depend on this water, it confirmed that its storage has increased by about 5 billion cubic meters.
The Director General of the General Authority for Groundwater at the Ministry of Water Resources, Maitham, said: “The Authority recorded a decrease in groundwater in some areas ranging between two and eight meters during the past four years,” noting that “in the years 2018/2019, reliance on groundwater did not exceed one million dunums, and currently it is 4 million dunums.”
He added, "The underground reservoirs in Iraq reach approximately 13 underground reservoirs," indicating that "the strategic study in the ministry confirmed that there is renewal and an increase of about 5 billion cubic meters, and that most of the renewal according to the strategic study is in the Kurdistan region and in the sedimentary plain, while the western and southern deserts do not exceed one billion cubic meters."
Khader explained that “there is an increase in the withdrawal of groundwater as a result of the cultivation of wheat crops,” stressing that “the General Authority for Groundwater is the only department that carries out its work directly, and that all wells are dug in the desert.”
