    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee confirmed, today, Saturday (December 7, 2024), that Iraq has no intention of sending any official military force to Syria.
Committee member Ali Nima said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "Iraq does not intend to send any official military force to Syria to fight the terrorist groups there, which certainly pose a danger and threat to Iraqi national security."
He explained that "Iraq's position is clear and declared, as it rejects any interference in the affairs of neighboring countries and the region. The military reinforcements published on the borders by the army and Popular Mobilization Forces are a precautionary measure to repel any danger from Iraq. These forces will certainly not cross the borders, and their mission is to defend Iraq's sovereignty and preserve its security and stability."
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed earlier that the government has worked since its formation to raise the level of readiness of the security forces and fortify the Iraqi borders, stressing the importance of coordinating positions with brotherly and friendly countries in the region, in order to prevent matters in Syria from slipping into dangerous stages.
Al-Sudani informed the Turkish President in a phone call that took place between them that Iraq will not stand by and watch the dangerous repercussions taking place in Syria, especially the ethnic cleansing of the components and sects there, stressing that Iraq had previously been harmed by terrorism and the results of extremist organizations controlling areas in Syria, and will not allow this to happen again.
In the latest developments in the region, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced last Tuesday that his country would consider any request to send military forces if it was submitted by the Syrian government.
