     Vancouver Canucks vs. Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames are hoping to stop a negative trend before heading off onto a very brief Christmas break. The Flames have lost three of their last four games and, more alarmingly, have been very much outplayed in all three of those losses. Calgary continues a stretch of 11 straight games against the Western Conference tonight when they play host to the Vancouver Canucks (7 pm, Sportsnet West and Sportsnet 960).
CALGARY FLAMES 17-16-2, 5TH PACIFIC DIVISION

    Matthew Tkachuk-Mikael Backlund-Michael Frolik
    Johnny Gaudreau-Sam Bennett-Alex Chiasson
    Kris Versteeg-Sean Monahan-Troy Brouwer
    Micheal Ferland-Matt Stajan-Garnet Hathaway

    Mark Giordano-Dougie Hamilton
    TJ Brodie-Dennis Wideman
    Tyler Wotherspoon-Deryk Engelland

The Flames fell 4-1 at the hands of the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night and the alarming trend mentioned above was on display. After a decent scoreless first period, Calgary allowed the first goal of the game early in the second period and found themselves on the back foot for the rest of the night. Even after scoring early in the third period, the Flames were unable to find any type of spark and went fairly quietly into the night. In each of Calgary’s last three losses, they’ve found themselves on the back foot for far too long and it’s a trend they’re looking to snap.
The Flames had a number of streaks come to an end in San Jose, including their run of games scoring a powerplay goal. Calgary’s streak of consecutive games with a powerplay marker came to an end at eight after going 0/1 against the Sharks; had they scored with the man advantage, it would have the team’s longest streak since March and April of 2002. On top of that, Monahan’s career-high point streak ended at ten games while Gaudreau saw his point streak stop at eight, one shy of setting a new career mark.

It's a big night for Wotherspoon as he makes his season debut with the team after being recalled on December 8th from the American League. In 20 games with AHL Stockton this year, Wotherspoon has a goal and six points and will play his first NHL game this season after playing 20 games at the highest level next year. Wotherspoon will play tonight in place of Jyrki Jokipakka while Hathaway will replace Lance Bouma on the right side of the fourth line.
As for the goaltender, it'll be Brian Elliott making his second start in three games. Elliott snapped his personal seven game losing skid Monday in Arizona and now will get an opportunity to play his first home game since a November 12th 4-1 loss to the New York Rangers. On the season, Elliott sits 4-9-1 with a 3.22 goals against average and an 0.889 save percentage.
VANCOUVER CANUCKS 14-17-3, 6TH PACIFIC DIVISION

    Daniel Sedin-Henrik Sedin-Jannik Hansen
    Loui Eriksson-Brandon Sutter-Markus Granlund
    Sven Baertschi-Bo Horvat-Alex Burrows
    Jack Skille-Michael Chaput-Jayson Megna

    Ben Hutton-Chris Tanev
    Luca Sbisa-Troy Stecher
    Nikita Tryamkin-Alex Biega

The Canucks are coming off two straight home games against the Winnipeg Jets and fell 4-1 in last night's showdown after taking the first game by the same score. In the big picture, things have been tough of late for Vancouver; they've gone 4-7-1 in their last 12 games and have some ground to make up in their playoff chase. Looking at the slightly smaller picture, though, things look a little bit better. The Canucks are 2-1-1 in their last four games which included a hard fought overtime loss at the hands of the surging Columbus Blue Jackets. Playing their third game in four nights, it'll be interesting to see what Vancouver has in the tank this evening.
The lines above are what the Canucks went with last night against Winnipeg and, with no morning skate today, we're not sure exactly what things will look like tonight. One thing we know for sure is Hansen won't play tonight after suffering a lower body injury. Hansen seemed to tweak something when making a cut and he had been involved in a knee-on-knee collision with Mathieu Perreault earlier in the game. Hansen had just been promoted to the top line a few games ago and had three points in two games prior to last night.

Ryan Miller got the start Thursday against the Jets so we'll see Jacob Markstrom go between the pipes tonight. While not quite an even split, Markstrom and Miller have shared the net this season with neither guy really separating himself from the pack. On the season, Markstrom is 7-7-2 with a 2.63 goals against average and a 0.908 save percentage.
