A blizzard swept through the northeast of the United States on Thursday, causing the closure of schools and government offices, the denial of tens of thousands of electricity, disruption of travel and the closure of John F. Kennedy airport for flights due to snow accumulation .
Thousands of flights were canceled and snowmobiles and heavy salt trucks appeared on the streets and highways. People who ventured into their jobs hope they can safely return home after the storm has intensified .
The authorities have issued warnings of the snowstorm along the coast from North Carolina to Maine and the National Weather Service predicted winds of up to 113 kilometers an hour, a speed that could lead to trees falling or power outages .
The snow is expected to rise by about 30 centimeters in Boston and coastal areas of New England in the north of the country .
The polar wave has killed at least 13 people in the past few days, including three in a car accident in the state of New South Carolina and three in Texas that died of severe cold .
Flight Flight Flight Service said more than 3,300 flights had been canceled before the storm began on Thursday. At three New York airports and Boston's Logan International Airport, three out of every four flights were canceled .
