BAGHDAD: The human rights office in Iraq has revealed an alarming number of slums in the country of up to three million citizens, indicating that the largest number of them recorded in the capital Baghdad.
"There are 3,700 random locations in Iraq, according to official figures from the Iraqi Ministry of Planning," UNHCR said in a statement.
She added that "there are a thousand random sites in Baghdad alone, thus leading the list of provinces, followed by Basra with 700 sites, while the province of Najaf and Karbala province at the bottom of the list with 98 random sites."
These squatter sites contain 522,000 housing units, housing the three million people who were forced to live by destitution and security conditions. Al-Bayati stressed in the aforementioned statement that "the expulsion of any of these persons and the removal of their home without providing an alternative to it, is a violation of human rights, as the right to housing is guaranteed in the Constitution and the responsibility of the State to provide every citizen."
It should be noted that the Municipality of Baghdad and municipal departments in the provinces recently intensified its efforts, in a campaign to remove abuses on state land, which caused the displacement of a large number of citizens, mostly low-income.
