The Wall Street Journal quoted Iraqi and American officials as saying that Washington encourages [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to strengthen its relations with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states and to move away from Iran.
The newspaper quoted Iraqi Finance Minister Ali Allawi as saying that the electrical interconnection projectWith Saudi Arabia, it is "about to finalize its details and offer bids to the implementers."
The Iraqi minister added during the Atlantic Council’s seminar over the Internet, that the Iraqi electricity network will be linked with the electricity grid of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
A spokesman for the Saudi Energy Ministry confirmed the project, and was quoted by the Wall Street Journal as saying that the agreement "is progressing towards completion" and includes a direct link between [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Saudi Arabia.
According to the American newspaper report, Iraqi and Saudi officials are discussing other joint projects, including billions of dollars in energy projects.
The report added that Saudi Arabia began investment talks in the Iraqi Artawi field project, at a cost of $ 2.2 billion, which aims to take advantage of the huge quantities of natural gas in it and convert them to produce electricity.
The newspaper reported that Iraqi and Saudi officials confirmed the news of the talks on Saudi investment in the project.
Saudi Arabia is also studying a joint investment project for the production of solar energy in Iraq, and the export of electricity generated from renewable energy in Saudi Arabia to Iraq, according to what a spokesman for the Saudi Ministry of Energy added and transmitted the newspaper's report.
In the field of energy other than energy, Saudi Arabia and Iraq are considering establishing a sports stadium that can accommodate 100,000 people at a cost of one billion dollars in Baghdad, financed and constructed by Saudi companies.
The newspaper stated that the US administration has renewed [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] exemption from sanctions imposed on Iran, allowing Baghdad to import electricity from Iran to face the problems of frequent power cuts in Iraqi cities. But Washington is also encouraging the Kazemi government to find alternatives to reduce dependence on Iran.
The report indicated that the processThe electrical connection will not be easy, and you will face challenges such as the need to modernize the Iraqi network to be able to carry electric current from the Saudi network or the Gulf networks. But the modernization and development process will not take more than a year.
The Iraqi Finance Minister said that the electrical connection between Saudi Arabia, Iraq and other Gulf countries means that "dependence on gas and electricity imports from Iran will begin to decline significantly from next year."
The Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi told reporters in Washington on Thursday that the US administration encourages his government to strengthen Gulf cooperation, and that it has facilitated meetings between Iraqi officials and officials from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries during the last period.
