Today, Tuesday, the Ministry of Justice revealed that Iraq is seeking to join international agreements to reduce the immigration problem, address the refugee situation and combat smuggling gangs.
The director of human rights in the ministry, Muhammad Al-Turki, said in a statement followed by the news agency, that "the department is working in coordination with the Ministries of Immigration and Foreign Affairs to join international agreements to limit migration and address refugee situations in a way that guarantees the provision of human rights principles in accordance with international standards."
He added, "The country's entry into these agreements provides an international legal system that limits the issue of migrants, as this problem is a kind of human rights violation, because the migrant may be subjected to torture or deprivation of his most basic rights by smuggling gangs."
He continued, "The importance of concerted international efforts to combat the crime of smuggling and to stop it in any way, especially since there are many people who have lost their lives or their most basic rights to live because of migration," noting that "those agreements will provide full protection for migrants, as well as help countries in Stop the gangs that promote or commit smuggling, and therefore there will be international law that supports the necessary protection for refugees.”
Al-Turki indicated that "Iraq intends to join the agreement to address the situation of the displaced, which guarantees that there are international rights for them."
He pointed out, "The existence of eight international conventions to which Iraq is a party in the field of human rights, in addition to two protocols attached to the rights of the child, in addition to the International Charter on Human Rights, and that each convention, whether related to women's rights, health or work, is related to human rights."
