    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Tuesday (September 5, 2023), the Parliamentary Integrity Committee revealed the most prominent "dilemma" facing Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani in the fight against corruption.
Committee member Duraid Jamil Ishou told "Baghdad Today" that "the current government has achieved successes in the issue of fighting corruption and holding the corrupt accountable, and there is remarkable progress in this file, especially by the Integrity Commission, and government efforts are escalating in fighting corruption."
He added, "The most prominent dilemma facing Al-Sudani in the fight against corruption is the political protection of some corrupt people and corruption files," noting that "despite all that and all the pressures, Al-Sudani is still working on this file vigorously with his government team to reduce the phenomenon of corruption, which It has become a real danger to state institutions."
It is noteworthy that since Muhammad Shia al-Sudani assumed the position of prime minister, in October 2022, statements have not ceased about the battle against corruption and terrorism, and the imposition of security and stability in the country. However, observers believe that the obstacles may be much greater than the capabilities of that government in light of the situation. current politician.
Everyone is gone and corruption remains
And while the scenario of statements about fighting corruption has not been interrupted since the first government after 2003, however, Al-Sudani considers corruption the number one challenge in Iraq and that the problem of corruption during the past years is that it was politically protected and this prevented previous governments from working to eradicate it.
Although there are no accurate and specific statistics on the amount of money looted or smuggled from Iraq, the current government has placed the file of recovering stolen money among its priorities.
In the midst of the alignment, many political and economic circles believe that Al-Sudani’s aspirations to fight corruption stand in front of many political and economic pitfalls at the same time. Although Al-Sudani enjoys parliamentary support of more than 250 out of a total of 329 deputies in Parliament who voted in favor of assuming the position, these deputies are They belong to political blocs, and action against corruption may harm their interests.
Al-Sudani reiterates his assurances, on several occasions, that his government will not remain silent about the looted funds, nor will it repeat the contexts of previous governments regarding the fight against corruption, indicating that Iraqi citizens want to hold the perpetrators of corruption accountable, and recover the stolen funds.
