A “financial budget” to support forests and green areas

Baghdad: The mainstay of the emirate.
The process of planting forests is of great importance on the economic and environmental levels, as these green spaces work to confront sand dunes and reduce desertification, in addition to their productive capacity represented in obtaining wood of all kinds, especially used in the manufacture of furniture and panels, as well as the manufacture of cellulosic paste. Paper, dyeing, and nylon, which led many specialists to demand the allocation of a “financial budget” aimed at supporting forest planting and improving the environmental situation in the country.
Director General of Forests and Desertification Control at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rawiya Mazal, told Al-Sabah:
Mazal explained, "The situation in Iraq portends danger to the fate of forest wealth due to the country's suffering from wind gusts and sandstorms in recent years, as well as the problem of stopping the afforestation of forests or artificially wooded areas and exploiting the existing ones for fuel, cooking, and heating."
Regarding the justifications for planting forests, Mizal explained that the productive benefits stand at the forefront of the importance of planting forests, as wood of all kinds is obtained, such as the wood used in the manufacture of furniture, panels, the manufacture of cellulosic paste, paper, dyeing, and nylon, in addition to the environmental protective benefits, which are summarized in the fact that the climate of forests is more moderate than in other areas. Free of forests and their effect on reducing the speed, movement and direction of the wind, as they act as storm buffers, emphasizing at the same time the importance of forests and their impact on the soil, preventing its erosion and improving its properties, as it works to absorb excess water and reduce the speed of its flow, thus increasing the groundwater reserve.
Mazal also indicated that forests have economic benefits, which are summarized in being a source for recycling solid waste to transform them into organic fertilizer, in addition to classifying forests as tourist areas due to their beauty and diversity that contribute to supporting the economies of countries, and many international reports indicate that they are one of the most important sectors that play an important role. In reducing poverty and providing work for the poor in the fields of forest protection, security patrols, safaris, hunting, and attracting tourists.
Regarding the issue of the problems that forests in Iraq suffer from, Mazal stated that the picture of the current situation in the country warns of danger, and evidence of this is what Iraq has suffered from continuous sand storms in recent years and the problem of stopping the afforestation of forests or artificially wooded areas and exploiting the existing ones for fuel, cooking and heating. There is a problem. The decline in the level of water coming into Iraq through the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and the lack of use of modern irrigation, which affected agriculture and its projects in general.
