    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Friday (September 15, 2023), the economic expert, Abdul Rahman Al-Mashhadani, reviewed several advantages that make the Iraqi development path more feasible than the American project to establish a corridor linking the ports of India and Europe, passing through some Gulf countries.
Al-Mashhadani told "Baghdad Today", "US President Joe Biden's project to establish a corridor to connect Indian ports to Europe via the Gulf countries is a political project par excellence and does not carry any economic feasibility compared to the Iraqi development road, which all reports confirm is the best in enhancing global transport."
He added, "The trade conflict between Washington and Beijing is what is behind the proposal of the Biden project," pointing out, "An objective reading of the economic feasibility of transporting goods from India to the ports of the Emirates and from there via railways passing through Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Israel, and from there to Greece, means double costs due to... Unloading, loading and paying transit to 5 countries, so it does not carry any benefit for companies and merchants.”
Al-Mashhadani pointed out, “The Iraqi development road is characterized by important points, the most prominent of which is reducing the arrival of goods from Southeast Asian ports to Europe by approximately 15 days, in addition to the fact that the unloading and loading process takes place once, not to mention the presence of a wide railway network from Turkey towards most European countries. There is a big difference in transit because it passes through specific destinations.”
He continued, "The development path is purely Iraqi, and its completion will create a qualitative leap in economic performance because of its many positives."
On September 9, during the G20 summit held in India, Saudi Arabia signed a memorandum of understanding to establish the economic corridor from India through Saudi Arabia and then Jordan towards Europe.
A number of social media users and those interested in economic affairs in Iraq put forward warnings that this path would lead to “killing” the Iraqi development path.
On the other hand, the Iraqi government says that the Chinese Belt and Road project, as well as the Indo-European Economic Corridor through Saudi Arabia, are two projects that are not linked to Iraq, so Iraq has proposed a development road project that will be a competitor to these two roads.
The Prime Minister's Advisor for Transport Affairs, Nasser Al-Asadi, revealed yesterday, Thursday, that Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani confirmed that there will be a large meeting during the current month to sign memorandums of understanding and initial contracts related to the development road project.
Al-Asadi told the official agency, “At a later time, we will have a very important meeting with one of the world’s leading consultants, for the purpose of studying economic cities, and his name will be important in the project,” noting that “the consultant designed large international cities, including Saudi Arabia’s NEOM.”
He pointed out, "Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani confirmed that within a very near period, not exceeding the end of this month, there will be a large meeting to sign memorandums of understanding or contracts in initials."
He pointed out that "the India-Middle East train project that was talked about at the G20 summit passes through many countries, so there must be major agreements between them that may be concluded or disrupted. As for the development path, it is an integrated national project and begins from Iraq to reach... Europe, as the proportion of the route within Iraq is 1,200 km, and within Turkey 2,000 km, and thus the total route line of the Development Road becomes 3,200 km, while the Indian project extends for a distance of 7,000 km, and the Development Road project is the shortest distance and lowest transportation costs.”
