The Council for Competition and Monopoly Affairs organized a dialogue symposium entitled Competition Law and its importance in regulating the commercial sector and the work environment in Iraq and providing an environment for the free economy, in cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce and the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, with the aim of examining the Council’s work mechanism and future projects.
Chairman of the Council, Dr. Ahmed Younis Qasim, referred to “the Council’s role in preserving public money, providing a safe investment environment, a positive climate for investment and the economy, and achieving sustainable development goals in accordance with the government curriculum.”
He added, "The Council provides an environment for a free economy, market stability, protects the rights of all parties in commercial transactions, and supports large and small projects."
The symposium curriculum included scientific sessions by a number of professors and specialists on liberalizing markets and regulating the business environment, competitive neutrality and its impact on enforcing competition laws, fair trade competition from the perspective of the World Trade Organization, technical regulations and enhancing competition activities, and the business climate project in Iraq.
The Council's work aims to regulate competition and prevent monopolistic practices harmful to society carried out by investors, producers, marketers and others in all economic activities.
Economic Advisor to the Federation of Iraqi Chambers of Commerce Dr. Raed Nizar Jamal said: “We presented a working paper during the symposium entitled Competition Law and its Importance in Regulating the Commercial Sector and the Business Environment in Iraq, and it included a survey and statistical study and indicators of the business environment in Iraq, which represent important indicators from the ground that help determine the requirements of the business environment in Iraq.” .
Jamal pointed out "the importance of the new approach that will be adopted, which includes the adoption of quantitative measurements in decision-making and policy-making," pointing out that "this approach received the attention of the attendees and was discussed with focus and thought."
He stated that "the papers that were presented represented an important point to begin the first steps of this council, whose members include the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, as it is an institution that simulates the international reality in trade and economics in order to reach the ultimate goal of achieving economic stability."
The symposium, which was held at the Guest House in the capital, Baghdad, was attended by a number of officials, economic experts and academics.
