An official source revealed, today, Tuesday (October 3, 2023), an expected visit by the Minister of Finance and Economy in the Kurdistan Regional Government to the capital, Baghdad.
The source said in an interview, “The Minister of Finance and Economy in the Kurdistan Regional Government, Awat Sheikh Janab, is scheduled to visit the capital, Baghdad, next Thursday.”
He added, “Some outstanding problems between Baghdad and Erbil will be discussed with the Parliamentary Finance Committee, including those related to the region’s share of the budget.”
On September 14, a high-ranking delegation from the Kurdistan Regional Government, headed by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, arrived in the capital, Baghdad, with the aim of holding discussions with the federal government regarding the monthly salaries of employees and workers in the public sector in the region and Kurdistan’s share of the budget.
At the time, Awat commented, “The main goal of the visit was to solve the problem of employee salaries and work to disburse them on time, similar to the salaries of Iraqi governorate employees,” stressing that “the majority of Iraqi political forces were of the same opinion not to mix the salaries of Kurdistan region employees with political differences, and this is done through Amending a section of the General Budget Law’s paragraphs and articles and excluding salaries from the actual spending accounts.”
Sheikh Janab stated, saying, “The central government deals with the Kurdistan region with duplicity in the field of implementing the budget law. In the issue of expenditures, it does not deal with the Kurdistan region in the same way as the 15 governorates of Iraq, and when it comes to oil revenues, it does not deal with the financial management law referred to in the budget law, which It requires that 50% of oil revenues go to the Kurdistan region, and the central government demands all of these revenues, and working in accordance with actual spending, reduces the Kurdistan region’s share of the budget so that it does not exceed 5% of it.
