People of the governorate.
Despite being one of the most prominent oil-producing countries in the Middle East, Iraq suffers from a chronic gas shortage, of which it imports large quantities from Iran, while the associated gas is burned to extract oil from which it can be used.
Iraq is among nine countries responsible for the majority of gas flaring operations, which account for about half of global oil production, as World Bank data indicate that Iraq is the second country in the world that uses this practice the most after Russia and before Iran and the United States. In 2020, The volume of gas burned in Iraq is 17.374 million cubic meters.
The Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, had previously stated that his government was determined to eliminate the burning of natural gas associated with the oil extraction process, and to make Iraq “active” in the global gas market.
