Today, Monday, the United Nations Security Council affirmed its support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq, while expressing its aspiration to form a representative Iraqi government.
In a statement received by Mawazine News, the council said, "The members of the Security Council welcomed the report of the Secretary-General on the electoral process in Iraq and the assistance of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) to this process, pursuant to resolution 2576 (2021), and the members of the Security Council welcomed the positive evaluation of the observers. International elections in the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq,” noting that “the members of the Council congratulated the Government of Iraq and the Independent High Electoral Commission for conducting technically well-managed and generally peaceful elections on October 10, 2021.
The Security Council also welcomed the findings of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq and the Independent High Electoral Commission that the partial manual recount of polling stations conforms to the electronic results transmission system of the Independent High Electoral Commission.
He added, “The members of the Security Council commended the Iraqi people for their commitment to the process.” In the face of dynamic security challenges, they acknowledged the role of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq in supporting the efforts of the Iraqi government and the Commission to plan and implement free and fair elections led by Iraqis.
"Members welcomed the efforts made by the Government of Iraq, the Independent High Electoral Commission and the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq to enhance participation women's politics," he said.The members of the Security Council commended the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) for demonstrating objectivity in its efforts to support Iraq throughout the electoral process.
He pointed out that "the members of the Security Council reiterated their condemnation of the assassination attempt that took place on November 7, 2021 against Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi and the continuing threats of violence against the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, the Independent High Electoral Commission and others," explaining that "the members of the Security Council expressed their They regret the use of violence to resolve election-related grievances, urged all political parties to pursue legal and peaceful means to resolve these grievances, condemned attempts to discredit the elections, and members of the Security Council encouraged all stakeholders to respect the legally defined process and facilitate a peaceful and independent judicial review of electoral appeals.
They noted, according to the statement, that "UN staff will continue to monitor any illegal attempts to undermine the electoral process."
The members of the Security Council renewed the Secretary-General’s call on all political parties, candidates and other stakeholders in Iraq to be patient and to address any election-related concerns through existing legal channels, and to create a post-election environment that promotes mutual understanding and national unity, through peaceful and constructive dialogue. The Security Council calls for the peaceful formation of an inclusive government that will advance meaningful reforms to meet the needs and aspirations of all Iraqis, including women, youth, and marginalized communities,” reiterating their support for Iraq’s independence, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
