Shafaq News/ An informed government source revealed, on Thursday, the objectives of the visit of the head of the Iraqi Intelligence Service, Hamid Al-Shatri, to Damascus and his meeting with the new Syrian administration there.
The source told Shafaq News Agency, "The visit of the head of the Iraqi Intelligence Service, Hamid Al-Shatri, to Damascus and his meeting with the new Syrian administration aims to confirm the Iraqi position of non-interference in the internal affairs of Syria, and to confirm that the Iraqi government will not allow the Iraqi armed factions to interfere in Syria in the future, in exchange for the armed groups not moving towards Iraq and controlling the borders well from within the Syrian depth."
The source, who asked not to be named, added that "the government and the various political poles pay special attention to the security and stability of Syria, and that the Iraqi security delegation will discuss a number of files of common interest, in addition to taking into account the preservation of the security of all components in Syria, especially minorities, as well as preserving the rights of the Shiite component and respecting its symbols."
The source continued, "Al-Shatri will inform the new Syrian administration that there is a real fear in Iraq of the possibility of ISIS elements escaping or smuggling from the prisons of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which are close to the Iraqi border. He will also discuss security and military coordination between Iraq and the Syrian Ministry of Defense, which will be restructured by the new Syrian administration."
The source indicated that "the delegation will present Iraq's security experience and its measures in maintaining security."
The government source pointed out that "Iraq's communication with the new Syrian administration came after international pressure, especially from the United States of America, which asked Baghdad to communicate with Damascus and keep pace with the change that occurred there, as is the case with the rest of the countries in the region."
Earlier, an informed political source revealed that a high-level delegation from the Iraqi intelligence service arrived in the Syrian capital, Damascus, to meet with the country's new administration.
The source told Shafaq News Agency, "The delegation, headed by the head of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service, Hamid Al-Shatri, arrived at the People's Palace in Damascus to meet with the new Syrian administration," without mentioning further details.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed last Saturday that the Iraqi government is working to assess the situation in Syria, in order to take the necessary decisions regarding its developments.
