The Ministry of Agriculture announced its measures to ensure the stability of red meat prices in local markets, while revealing an electronic platform to facilitate the import of meat and livestock.
The administrative undersecretary of the ministry, Mahdi Sahar, said in a statement to the official media that “the ministry is working to provide red meat and confront any increase in its prices in local markets, to meet local demand.”
He explained that “the import of livestock for the purposes of slaughter and breeding has been opened from various reliable international origins, in addition to importing meat from all countries of the world, provided that the country is a member of the World Health Organization,” indicating that “this is linked to the exchange of veterinary health certificates proving that the meat is free of epidemic diseases, in order to ensure the health and safety of citizens.”
He pointed out that “the ministry’s efforts are continuing to monitor local markets and meet citizens’ needs for agricultural goods and products, including red meat,” noting that “the ministry supports breeders by providing feed, such as subsidized yellow fodder corn, and distributing free fodder bran among buffalo breeders in four governorates in southern Iraq.”
He explained that “these measures aim to increase the number of livestock locally, and thus increase the supply of locally produced meat from cattle, cows, and buffaloes,” noting that “the procedures for importing red meat and livestock from abroad are facilitated through an electronic platform dedicated to submitting import requests, with the exchange of veterinary health certificates to ensure the smooth flow of imports.”
He stressed that “the year 2024 witnessed a significant increase in imports from global origins, including Georgia, Brazil, and several other countries, in addition to the readiness to open imports from African countries soon.”
He continued, “The red meat market seemed to be witnessing stability, with a significant decrease in its prices expected in the coming period, as a result of the abundance of local production and the increase in imports, which will contribute to achieving a balance in the local market.”
