The Oilers recalled Anton Lander and sent back Taylor Beck to the AHL. Lander is fighting to be labelled more than an “AHL Tweener”. He’s a good player, maybe even a great player…in the AHL. In the NHL he’s really only had a single stretch where the offense translated for him. Without Todd Nelson as the resident Lander-Whisperer he’s been lost at sea.

The Oiler drafted Lander 40th, early in the 2nd round in 2009. He wasn’t drafted for his offense. He was noted for his leadership and defensive ability. He could skate a bit too, but on paper that reads in hindsight like the Oilers were blinded by his intangibles. Edmonton, as they’ve been prone to do forever, graduated Lander to the NHL before he ever found offense in any league. He went straight from the Swedish Elite League into the NHL without even getting a sniff of the AHL until his confidence was in tatters.

It wasn’t until 2013-2014 that Lander started to produce at an elite level in the AHL, but he got there. Since the 2013-2014 began, Lander has picked up 37-67-104 in 88 AHL games. In that same time frame he’s managed just 8-19-27 in 142 NHL games. That’s 1.18 points per game in the AHL and just 0.19 points per game in the NHL. Almost an entire point per game difference.

This most recent stint in the AHL Lander has 21 points in 13 games. He’s killing it.

In his best ever stretch in the NHL Lander 20 points in 38 games (Thank you, Todd). It’s so tantalizing thinking that somewhere in this Swedish Pirate there’s an NHL player ready to contribute. At 25 years of age, you have to think that he wants to be more than an AHL guy. The call of the KHL has to be ringing in his ears and getting louder every time he’s sent back down to the minors. Eventually it will make more sense to earn more money overseas.

I hope he can sort it out. With Draisaitl currently taking the RW spot beside RNH, there should be a more open competition for that 3C spot. Right now it belongs to Caggiula, but we don’t know if he’s better suited to the wing. If Lander can grab that spot then it could allow Caggiula to move over and the club to finally give AHL minutes to Puljujarvi.

I hope he figures it out soon. If he could just translate half of that AHL offense to the NHL then he would be a great depth center for this club.

    OILERS KEYS TO THE GAME

    1) CBJ PP1. The Blue Jackets have the most lethal Power Play in the NHL and it is drawing the attention of some of the most influential analytics people. Their 1st unit in particular is crushing it and that has to do with a great mix of offhanded players in the right position, some great tactics, and the highest shooting percentage in the league on the PP doesn’t hurt either. Edmonton has a top 10 PP too, but it behooves the team to stay out of the box tonight. Atkinson, Wennberg, Foligno, Werenski, and Gagner all have 13 or more Power Play points. Gagner’s 28 points in 34 games puts him in line to be the most improved player in the NHL this year. Everything is going right for this group and a huge part of this offense is what happens on the man-advantage.

    2) Maroon and McDavid. The Oilers have finally paired Maroon and McDavid again. Lucic has been more impactful offensively when playing with Draisaitl or RNH than he has with McDavid. And, McDavid has been unreal when paired with Maroon. This is probably the best possible configuration for Edmonton’s top 6. They are going into the game against the NHL’s hottest/best team with what appears to be the best possible lineup offensively. If they’re going out, they are going out guns blazing. Maroon brings out the best in McDavid perhaps for a couple reasons, but now I’m speculating. I believe it has to do with the fact that Maroon certainly has hands and knows where to go in the offensive zone, but he isn’t a puck carrier and he’s not a star. McDavid cant defer to Maroon, the play has to start with 97 and any play that starts with 97 is inherently more dangerous than started with any other Oiler.

    3) Sergei. Columbus netminder Sergei Bobrovsky is having a great bounce-back season after a disastrous 2015-2016. Last year he was below league average with a .908 save percentage in just 37 games. He’s already up to 31 games and he has a spectacular .934 percentage. Game to game he’s been a rock for the Blue Jackets. He’s only been below .900 in a single game 5 times this year and only once in the last dozen or so games. Talbot has been steady for the Oilers as well, but he’s had almost twice as many off nights. Edmonton will have to work hard to make life miserable for the Blue Jackets. This is a team that should be playing with the confidence of knowing that the goalie has their backs.
