Coyotes End Streak + Dominate World Juniors

The Coyotes losing streak lasted three weeks and nine games, but they were finally able to get a W last night vs. the Islanders. While I was at Red Lobster, where there was a dinner-ruining hair in my lobster taco, the Coyotes were playing an (I assume) hard fought game vs the Islanders.

I did, however, see the highlights, and seeing them, you just know the Coyotes were due: the Islanders hit two posts in overtime.

The game went to a shoot-out and the Coyotes were victorious.

Not to be overly critical, but that makes 11 games since the Coyotes won in regulation.

In other news, Laurent Dauphin was recalled before the game in order to cover for the recent injury of Martin Hanzal (pretend to be shocked). Hanzal is considered day to day, but when is he not?

    ---------

The Coyotes have to be pretty psyched to win that game because, let's face it, no one wants to head into a five day break with a ten game losing streak on their back.

They don't play until next Friday vs Winnipeg.

    ---------

Max Domi is back skating - though why is that news? The guy has a broken hand, I am pretty sure he could have skated this entire time. Maybe the report I read said meant to say he was back at practice? Who knows.

The important thing is that Domi is back soon.

    --------

The Coyotes had a positive World Junior experience.

Co-Top Prospects Dylan Strome and Clayton Keller both had strong tournaments.

Keller had the second most points, 11, in the entire tournament and was the leading scorer on the Gold Medal winning team USA.

MINUS: Why in the hell does the tournament go to a shoot-out? What a stupid way to end a tournament. Have these cats never heard of continuous OT? What a joke. I mean, I don't even care if the U.S won, but at least let them play.

As for Strome, he was fourth in scoring, lead the way for Canada and was third overall w/ his total of ten points.

The Coyotes may be having a garbage season, but they are truly a stacked team of the future.

Strome and Keller, with Domi, Duclair, and OEL + a top 3 pick in this years draft. It's eventually going to be pretty fun. As a guy who watches every Leafs game too, I can promise you this.

One reason the Coyotes suck so bad is that - despite the addition of supposed Stats Guy John Chayka to the team's management - they don't seem to have a clue.

For example, Luke Schenn played 23 minutes last night. Kevin Connauton played 7.

Kevin Connauton is the Coyotes' possession leader. He's one of the only players they have who makes the team get more shots for than against when he's on the ice.

Now, this clearly isn't the entire factor in judging a players' effectiveness. For example, OEL still is one of the best players in the entire league at any position, but he gets thrown to the wolves on a nightly basis and has terrible possession stats, even relative to his team.

Unfortunately for him, he's often saddled with a garbage partner AND a tough assignment.

Still, Connnauton has earned more icetime and may be the perfect partner for OEL. I mean, his relative-Corsi doubles the next best guy on the team.
