Iran will not ask for "permission from anyone" to build up its missile capabilities in what appeared to be a united response to US efforts to curb the Iranian military, President Hassan Rowhani said on Saturday.
As he prepares to run in May in hopes of winning a second four-year term, Rouhani is forced to defend his record against opponents who say he has sought too much to placate the West after agreeing to curb Iran's nuclear program in return for lifting sanctions.
US President Donald Trump criticized the nuclear deal and said during his campaign that he would stop Iran's missile program. After Iran tested a new ballistic missile in January, Trump wrote in his Twitter account that Tehran was "playing with fire."
"Strengthening the capabilities of the Iranian armed forces ... is only for the defense of the country and we will not ask permission from anyone to build the armed forces, missiles and aircraft," Rowhani said in a speech during his review of homemade military hardware and state television.
"Iran has never had" hostile objectives but peace is not a unilateral route and if we decide to be peaceful, perhaps the other side will not be, so there is a need to be cautious, "he said.
The US Senate has postponed a bill to impose new sanctions on Iran for launching ballistic missiles and other non-nuclear activities over concerns over the presidential election.
Iran says its missile tests are unrelated to the nuclear deal.
