US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced that President Donald Trump had decided to determine the compatibility of lifting partial sanctions on Iran, which came within the framework of an international agreement, with US interests.
"President Donald Trump has ordered a general review of a comprehensive joint action plan involving various institutions under the leadership of the National Security Council," Tillerson said in a statement on Monday. "The review will assess whether the suspension of sanctions against Iran is in line with the US vital interests plan."
However, in a letter addressed to House Speaker Paul Ryan, the State Department confirmed that Iran, until April 18, had fulfilled its obligations under the agreement.
A statement issued by the State Department that the Foreign Minister, however, "expressed concern about the role of Iran in the form of state sponsor of terrorism, and briefed Congress on the work ordered by the President to assess whether the suspension of further sanctions corresponds with the interests of national security or not.
On July 14, 2015, Iran and the six international mediators reached a historic agreement on resolving Iran's long-standing nuclear program.
The Comprehensive Joint Action Plan was adopted, which provided for the lifting of the economic and financial sanctions imposed on Tehran by the Security Council, the United States and the European Union. The agreement took effect on January 16, 2016.
