The White House announced new conditions for citizens of six Muslim-majority countries and refugees to have strong family or commercial ties in the United States in order to obtain visas.
The new regulations, which will apply to citizens of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, will enter into force on Thursday, June 29.
The US administration can issue these new conditions after the Supreme Court ruled that part of the ban, which President Donald Trump had announced shortly after taking office, should be implemented.
Several lower US courts have overturned Trump's decision.
The new conditions include a stipulation that in the next 90 days, none of the six countries with close ties to an American citizen - parents, spouse, children, descent or brothers - will be allowed to enter the United States.
The definition of "close relationship" does not apply to grandparents, aunts, aunts, uncles, uncles, sons, cousins, grandchildren, and other family members.
The new conditions also exclude those who have business or educational ties with the United States.
But the conditions announced on Thursday explicitly state that the above-mentioned relations must be documented, formal and constructed in a normal manner, not for the purpose of evading the presidential decision.
The new resolution will not be affected by those who have already obtained visas, and holders of dual nationalities who use their passports from countries not covered by the resolution will be allowed to enter the United States.
The new conditions will come into force at 8 pm Washington time on Thursday.
But lawyers who support and oppose the ban warn that the new restrictions that will apply until the Supreme Court issues its final verdict on the matter will open the door to legal proceedings.
The Supreme Court will not review the case until next October.
The Supreme Court also established Trump's ban on refugees entering the United States for 120 days unless they had a "verifiable relationship" with US citizens or entities.
The Trump administration has set a ceiling for the number of refugees the US will accept, no more than 50,000, a figure the State Department says will be met in the next two weeks.
Human rights groups have been tackling Trump's ban on presidential orders in the past five months.
Trump says the ban is necessary to prevent terrorists from entering the United States, but critics say it is specifically targeted at Muslims.
