Tillerson will visit Kuwait next Monday to discuss the crisis with Qatar

    Editorial date: 2017/7/7

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will visit Kuwait on Monday for talks with senior Kuwaiti officials on the Gulf crisis, US State Department spokeswoman Heather Naort said.
"At the invitation of the Emir, Tillerson will travel to Kuwait on Monday where he will meet with senior Kuwaiti officials to discuss efforts to resolve the Gulf dispute," Naort said in a statement late Thursday.
She thanked Kuwait for its efforts to resolve the dispute, saying that "doing so is not easy."
The crisis between the two countries - Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain - and Qatar has been exacerbated after the four countries said Doha's rejection of its demands was proof of its links with the terrorist groups and would take new measures against them.
The two countries issued a joint statement, quoted by state media on Thursday, saying that the list of 13 demands had become obsolete and would take new political, economic and legal measures against Qatar.
"The Qatari government has sabotaged the diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute and its rejection of the demands confirms its continued attempts to sabotage and undermine security and stability in the region," she said.
The actions taken by the four countries were aimed at the Government of Qatar, not its people. The countries did not give details of when the new steps would be announced or what would happen.
The foreign ministers of the four countries met in Cairo on Wednesday after a 10-day deadline to implement their demands, describing Doha's response as "negative" and lacking content.
Since last month, Qatar has severed diplomatic ties and links with Qatar, accusing it of supporting terrorism. Doha denies the charges.
Among the demands for Qatar were the suspension of support for the Muslim Brotherhood, the closure of the Al-Jazeera satellite channel, the closure of a Turkish military base in Doha and the reduction of relations with Iran.
