[ltr]The Turkish Prime Minister, Greece, warned of the need to stop the "provocations" after raising the Greek flag on the island of disputed uninhabited in the Aegean Sea off the Turkish coast.[/ltr]
[ltr]Prime Minister Ben Ali Yildirim told reporters on Monday that the Turkish coast guard had removed the flag from the island off the coast of the Didim resort in the Aegean Sea.[/ltr]
[ltr]Yildirim confirmed that the incident was similar to the one in 1996, when clashes broke out between the two NATO allies on the uninhabited islands of Imia, which is disputed by Turkey and Greece.[/ltr]
[ltr]"Our advice to Greece is to stay away from provocations and moves," the prime minister said. "We are determined to respond appropriately to such events."[/ltr]
[ltr]In Athens, Greek government spokesman Dimitris Tsanakopoulos said the government was not aware of the incident and described Yildirim's remarks as "provocative and outrageous."[/ltr]
[ltr]"I think Mr. Yildirim should be more cautious ... We call on Turkey to return to the path of respect for international law ... They should accept an initiative to calm the tension," Tsanakopoulos said.[/ltr]
