The Australian government has passed a new law banning food deliveries to Muslim asylum seekers held at its remote sites in Ramadan, while the Australian Navy has supported its forces with new ships to fight human trafficking, insisting on adopting strict methods to prevent illegal immigration.
For years, during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, members of Australia's Muslim community have been preparing home meals to share with asylum-seekers detained for breakfast. However, changes in federal laws have banned unackaged food to asylum-seekers' detention centers, according to international reports.
The Australian government insists the law is necessary to maintain the health and safety of detainees, but human rights activists say the measures are "offensive to humanity" and part of an attempt to keep detainees out of public view.
There are hundreds of Muslims in detention facilities for asylum seekers across Australia, which currently holds 1,389 asylum seekers, the majority of whom have fled wars in Syria and Afghanistan after a risky voyage across Southeast Asia.
In the context of its strict policy to prevent the entry of asylum seekers and illegal immigration, the Australian Navy supported its forces with new ships to fight human trafficking.
The Australian Border Force has reinforced its naval capabilities in Western Australia by launching a new 12.4-meter patrol vessel called Rottnest Island based in Fremantle. It will also be deployed in southwest and central-west regions to stop smuggling, particularly for asylum seekers.
