(International: Al-Furat News) The French newspaper Le Monde said that Saudi Arabia threatened to target Qatar militarily if it received the Russian S-400 missile system.
The newspaper pointed out that King Salman bin Abdul Aziz asked the intervention of French President Emmanuel Macaron to prevent the completion of the deal.
The Saudi king has sent a letter to the French president expressing his concern that Qatar is close to a deal with Russia for the S-400 air defense missile, a move Saudi Arabia sees as threatening its airspace and warning escalation in the region.
The king threatened to "take all appropriate measures to neutralize this defense system, including military intervention," and asked the French president to help prevent the sale of the system to Qatar and maintain stability in the region.
The French newspaper said it had received no comments from the French Foreign Ministry and the Saudi authorities on the content of the letter, which was briefed on details from a French source described as close to the issue.
The ambassador of Qatar to Russia Fahd bin Mohammed al-Attiyah said earlier this year that Qatar is seeking to acquire the Russian missile system, which is one of the latest systems of air defense in the world, and confirmed that the negotiations with the Russian authorities at an advanced stage.
A month after the Qatari ambassador's remarks, Saudi Arabia also announced its bid for the S-400.
The Saudi threats come in the context of successive developments to target Qatar since the imposition of the embargo about a year ago, and provides an indication that there is no intention to reduce the tension in preparation for a solution to the Gulf crisis.
