Iran's parliament suspended the draft law on joining the United Nations Convention against the Financing of Terrorism for another two months. The bill was approved by 138 votes to 103, with 6 abstentions.

It is noteworthy that this Convention is a UN treaty established seventeen years ago in 1999 to encourage governments and cooperation among themselves to cut off funds from terrorist organizations and groups, to which 187 countries have so far joined.

The fundamentalists who opposed Iran's accession to the anti-terrorism financing agreement expressed concern that accession would undermine Iran's support for regional allies such as Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas group, which the United States and the European Union have put on the list of terrorist organizations.

Hardliners in Iran's parliament fear that joining the UN Convention against the Financing of Terrorism threatens the position of some members of the Revolutionary Guard, including Qasim Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force, on the US list of terrorists.
