The prime minister and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Haider al-Abadi, passed on Saturday the transfer of the units responsible for the protection of the Iranian institutions and consulate in Basra to the investigation.
A statement issued by the office of Abadi said that the latter "ordered the transfer of security units responsible for the protection of Iraqi institutions and consulate in Basra to the investigation of the failure to perform their duties in providing the necessary protection."
On Friday, angry demonstrators burned the building of the Iranian consulate in the central district of Basra, after breaking through its security barrier and forming a team that took over the security forces that came to keep the demonstrators away from the headquarters.
The Iranian Consulate, after burning its headquarters in Basra, threatened to take international legal methods, while confirming that it does not accuse any party of this action.
