The plane of American First Lady Melania Trump returned to the Andrew Air Base after being subjected to a "mechanical problem", CNN television reported on Wednesday.
"The passenger compartment was filled with smoke ten minutes after the plane took off and there was a smell that smelled like something burning," the station quoted reporters on board.
A number of journalists pointed out that the crew of the plane asked the passengers to put wet cloths in water if the smell intensified.
The plane, a Boeing C-32A, landed safely on board, along with Melania Trump, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and a number of journalists.
Stephanie Grisham, spokeswoman for Melania Trump, said the incident was "a secondary mechanical problem. Everything is fine and everyone is safe. Mrs. Melania kept her trip and decided to board another plane."
The wife of the US president was heading to the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, where she is scheduled to give a lecture on the effects of abstinence.
