Scientists believe that a probe launched by NASA reached the end of the solar system early Tuesday morning and is flying close to a 20-mile-long space rock, billions of miles from Earth, as part of a mission to collect information on the origin of the solar system.
The New Horizons probe is expected to reach the third area deep into the Kuiper belt, and scientists will only get confirmation of its successful arrival after the probe sends data about its location through the deep space network.
Once the probe enters the outer layer of the belt containing frozen objects and debris to form the solar system, it will take a first close look at Altima Thuli, a large block in the form of a peanut bean.
Scientists say they did not discover Altima Thule when the probe was launched, making its mission unique. In 2014, astronomers monitored Altima Thule using the Hubble Space Telescope and chose it to be part of the New Horizons mission that began in 2015.
"Everything is possible in this very unknown region," John Spencer, a New Horizons scientist, told reporters at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland.
The New Horizons launched in January 2006 to cut four billion miles towards the icy limbs of the solar system to study Pluto and its five moons.
As he approached Pluto in 2015, the probe discovered that Pluto was slightly larger than believed, and in March discovered methane-rich dunes on Pluto's surface.
The probe was cut a billion miles behind Pluto towards the Kuiper belt and is now seeking information on the origin of the solar system and its planets.
The probe will fly 3,500 kilometers from the surface of the Altima Thole mass and scientists hope to know the chemical composition of their atmosphere and terrain on a mission NASA says will be the closest monitoring of a body to that extreme dimension of Earth.
