A report by the Iranian authorities on the arrest of a former US military was visiting his girlfriend, joining three other US citizens, including two of Iranian origin, arrested by Tehran.
The New York Times quoted his mother as saying Michael White, 46, from California, was no longer on a trip through Dubai, as was expected in July.
For its part, the State Department said it was "aware of reports" about his arrest, but refused to disclose any details for privacy considerations.
"Our priority is no more important than the safety and security of American citizens abroad," said a State Department spokesman.
Joan White, a former military mother of the New York Times, said her son visited Iran "five or six times" to see an Iranian woman who was his girlfriend.
She said she had learned from the State Department that he was being held in Iran on unclear charges.
She said she had asked her son to visit officials from the Swiss consulate, which represents the interests of the United States in Iran in the absence of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
