The US forces in Iraq "will remain there in the long term to achieve the desired goals," a report by the US Department of Defense said.
The Pentagon report to the US Congress addresses US operations in the Middle East, particularly in Iraq and Syria, covering the period from 1 October to 31 December 2018.
The Pentagon report said Syria's pro-American Democratic forces, North and north-east of Syria, are currently ineligible for offensive military operations against Dahesh without the support of the US-led coalition forces against Dahesh, and that Qusd forces lack the capacity to collect and use intelligence effectively.
The Pentagon stressed that the Russian presence in Syria is a destabilizing factor there.
On the Iranian presence in Syria, the report quoted the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Security Affairs as saying that the US sanctions imposed on Iran had a limited impact on its ability to operate in Syria, and revealed the use of Iranian forces ballistic missiles against the fighters in Damascus, "without informing the troops US military in advance.
