Communications Minister Naim al-Rubaie said on Thursday there was no directive from the government to cut Internet service to Baghdad and other provinces so far.
The Ministry of Communications denied on Monday that the Internet was cut on Friday and Saturday after the publication of a document to this effect.
A source at the ministry told Al-Furat News that "there is no truth in the document that was circulated in the media about the intention of the Ministry of Communications to conduct maintenance work on Friday and Saturday to serve the Internet and that the ministry has no intentions to disconnect the Internet in the coming days."
The capital Baghdad and other provinces on Friday are preparing to come out with popular demonstrations against corruption, unemployment, quotas, poor services and other problems.
Authorities have vowed to protect protesters during their protests on Friday, while no pledges have been made to allocate sites for journalists to cover the event.
The Ministry of Interior has issued a "C" alert for all its employees, which is considered the highest level of alert, in anticipation of any emergency during the upcoming demonstrations.
The Journalists' Syndicate has also allocated phone numbers to report any case of assault on journalists during the demonstrations, as some media institutions have been attacked by unknown parties during the recent demonstrations.
