Reporters Without Borders ranked Iraq one hundred and sixty-three out of one hundred eighty countries and regions in the annual World Press Freedom Index for the year 2000.

In its classification, the organization said that journalists in Iraq risk their lives as a result of their coverage of protests or when they investigate issues of corruption, indicating that the intensity of violence and pressure on journalists in Iraq has increased since the outbreak of the popular movement, as journalists who report protests of demonstrators face the risk of harassment, kidnapping or assault. Or even assassination by unknown gunmen or affiliated with one of the armed factions.
