The Iraqi mediation is entering an advanced stage: the Saudi and Iranian ambassadors in Baghdad will meet soon
Baghdad / Muhammad Sabah
It is expected that the Saudi and Iranian ambassadors will meet in Baghdad after the Eid holiday to complete the consultations and discussions that started a short time ago to settle all files and disputes. These diplomatic meetings will continue between the two countries in preparation for holding the quadripartite meeting that brings together Iraq, the United States of America, Saudi Arabia and Iran.
Rahim al-Aboudi, a member of the General Authority for the Wisdom Movement, explained in a statement to (Al-Mada) that "the rapprochement process between Saudi Arabia and Iran has developed a lot during the past few years after it witnessed continuous meetings and meetings between its intelligence services trying to discuss the files that will be presented to the table of understandings in the coming stages.
Al-Mada revealed at the end of last March that Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazimi, during his visit to Riyadh, had presented a mediation file to bridge the gap between Saudi Arabia and Iran and settle them in a meeting to be held in Baghdad with the participation of the United States.
Al-Aboudi believes that "the rapprochement between the Turkish, Saudi and Egyptian sides somewhat delayed the talks and the state of rapprochement taking place between Saudi Arabia and Iran," indicating that "these dialogues require first discussion in the intelligence corridors and then discussed at the diplomatic level before presenting them at the leaders' meeting."
He points out that "the Saudi and Iranian intelligence services have completed the first stage of understandings, which are related to discussing many files, including the oil file and lifting the siege on Tehran, as well as the war in Yemen," adding that "the next step will be at the level of meetings and diplomatic visits between the two countries."
By adopting mediation between Saudi Arabia and Iran, Iraq seeks to reduce tensions between the two prominent rivals in the Arab Gulf, at a time when these efforts need quiet support from the United States to enhance stability in the region.
A member of the General Authority for the Stream of Wisdom points out that, “On the Eid holiday, the Iranian and Saudi sides will exchange congratulatory messages as a first step for a prospective meeting that brings together the Iranian and Saudi ambassadors in the capital, Baghdad, to arrange and moisten the atmosphere between the two parties to prepare for the holding of the quadripartite conference in which Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United States of America will attend.”
A week ago, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said that Iran is a neighboring country and that his country aspires to have a good relationship with it, wishing the Houthis to sit at the dialogue table to end the war in Yemen.
Al-Aboudi continues that "in this conference, all files will be discussed in order to sign a memorandum of understanding or conclude an agreement between the two sides," indicating that "the features of this conference will be clear after the Eid Al-Fitr holiday and the meeting of the Iranian and Saudi ambassadors in Baghdad.
And the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced, earlier, that it welcomed “Saudi Arabia’s change of its political tone,” pointing to the possibility of entering a new chapter of interaction and cooperation.
Al-Aboudi expects that "a high-level diplomatic meeting in the capital Baghdad will bring together the Saudi and Iranian sides, who will discuss all differences and files in the form of a series of meetings."
The Al-Kazemi government pursued a new foreign policy of non-alignment between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Iraqi prime ministers often schedule trips to Tehran and Riyadh together in order to show this balance.
For his part, Dhafer Al-Ani, deputy head of the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee, comments in a statement to Al-Mada that “the Saudi-Iranian rapprochement is welcome, as it will help stabilize the region and defuse the current tension.” Holds in the region ”.
Al-Ani added that "solving regional and international problems will push to create a safe regional environment that will reflect positively on the situation in Iraq and end all manifestations of interference in its internal situation in forming the government and other matters," stressing that "external interventions always cause confusion and internal tension."
About a decade ago, relations between Tehran and Riyadh soured due to proxy wars in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen, in which each of the two countries supported a different party to the conflict in them.
Regarding the seriousness of the parties in solving these problems and challenges, the deputy from Baghdad governorate answers that "there is seriousness from all parties to resolve all differences and problems and settle them," noting that "Iraq did not play the role of mediator, but rather provided an opportunity to meet these competing and conflicting parties in the region."
He points out that "the Iraq initiative was limited to gathering the parties and not in presenting a specific initiative."
