{Local: Al Furat News} Iraqi ports revealed the latest developments in the work of the Al-Faw port project.
The Director General of the General Company for Iraqi Ports, Farhan Muhaisin Al-Fartousi, said that "the Al-Faw port project was launched in several stages, where the completion of the eastern breakwater and the western breakwater was completed, and then attached projects began for the purpose of cutting the basin of the port of Faw."
He noted that "the port was built in an area that was a war zone, and therefore the land must be prepared for this project. There was a contract worth 192 million dollars for the purpose of cutting the sea in order to prepare it for subsequent works. This project was worked on in 2019 and will be completed at the end of this year." ".
And he indicated that "the other project is the high-specification internal roads project, which costs 70 million dollars, has reached the completion stages and is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year," adding that "the Yar project or the basin in which the concrete blocks that form the submerged tunnel with a length of 2000 meters will be built." Its location is below the Khor Al-Zubair Canal, and its purpose is to connect the highway from the Al-Faw area towards Umm Qasr and vice versa, to be completed by the end of this year.
As for the five contracts that were signed at the end of 2020, Al-Fartousi confirmed that "there are five projects that started after the contract was signed, but at a light pace that was not accelerated as a result of the lack of financial allocations, as the examination of the seabed on which the five berths will be built was completed. ".
He explained, "At the same time, the soil examination at the seabed was completed through special equipment that digs the bottom to a depth of twenty meters, and then treated it with sand and cement, and then we check the hardness of the seabed and its conformity with what was designed, and we noticed through the examination that it has reached levels of higher than the norm in rigidity.
Al-Fartousi pointed out that "the entire soil examination of the highway linking Umm Qasr and the city of Al-Faw has been completed, and mine detection tests have been completed for this road, after launching the financial allocations that will be secured until the end of next year."
He continued, "The Al-Faw port project is continuing to be completed, regardless of internal or external attempts to obstruct its achievement, in light of the strong will, although we previously faced obstacles that we were able to overcome, and we drew a plan to establish this project for the Iraqi state, and the politicians were fully supportive of the success of this project."
He added, "The percentage of completion of the five projects varies, some of which will be completed in 3 years and others more, but the general rate of project completion will be fully completed within less than 4 years, and if any financial abundance is available, we will pressure the Korean company with the aim of completing it in a shorter period."
Al-Fartousi indicated that "with the design of the Faw port, I also designed a dry canal linking Iraq with neighboring countries, especially with Turkey and Syria, so that we would have the fast and dry passage from east to west and north, and the launch of this phase will begin in the near future by drawing the policy for the establishment of the dry canal Either by highways or by railways.
On April 11, Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi laid the foundation stone for the Great Faw Port project (the Five Contracts), which includes: the five container berths, filling the storage and container handling yard, digging the internal navigation channel, digging and furnishing the external navigation channel, and the Khor Al-Zubair channel tunnel, And the highway linking the port of Faw and Umm Qasr.
It is noteworthy that the great port of Al-Faw in the province of Basra is one of the important strategic projects in Iraq. The government hopes, through this vital project, to supply the state treasury with new revenues that are parallel to the revenues generated from the sale of crude oil. The implementation of the first phase of the project was referred to the South Korean company Daewoo, at a cost An amount of $2.62 billion, and the port will enable the port to handle 3 million containers annually with the completion of this stage, while the previous Iraqi government estimated the total cost of completing the port’s three-phase construction project, at about $5.06 billion.
